Labour leader Keir Starmer has officially become prime minister of the United Kingdom. He received the blessing of King Charles III to form a new government in a traditional ceremony known as the “kissing of hands” at Buckingham Palace.

The formal photo of the occasion served as the official announcement of Starmer’s ascension to the role of prime minister. Immediately after the ceremony, Starmer proceeded to No. 10 Downing Street, where he will now reside and conduct his official duties.

Starmer’s accession marks the end of the Conservative Party’s 14-year tenure in power under former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Sunak tendered his resignation to King Charles III following Labour’s landslide victory in the general election.

In his farewell remarks, Sunak acknowledged the electorate’s verdict, describing it as “sobering.” He expressed gratitude for having served as prime minister and addressed the nation from the steps of 10 Downing Street, where he had called for the snap election six weeks earlier.

“I leave this job honoured to have been prime minister of the best country in the world,” Sunak said, reflecting on his tenure. He also apologised for the Conservative Party’s electoral defeat, acknowledging the efforts of party members and campaigners.

“To all the Conservative candidates and campaigners who worked tirelessly but without success, I’m sorry that we could not deliver what your efforts deserved,” Sunak stated.
