Donna Balzer, a horticulturalist, author and friend of mine, recently shared a shocking update — she was eating a tomato from her garden, and the email was dated Jan. 14! Even though Balzar lives on the West Coast, I had to ask how she was possibly enjoying tomatoes in the dead of winter.
