Folarin Falana, the Nigerian activist-musician will not be participating in a proposed peace walk being championed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos until victims of police brutality get justice.
Sanwo-Olu, in a broadcast on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, extended an olive branch to Nigerian youths and invited star activists like Falz, Debo Adebayo, aka Mr Macaroni, Seun Kuti and others who have been campaigning against police brutality and calling for justice for victims of Lekki tollgate massacre on October 20, 2020, to join him in the peace walk to ‘herald the healing of Lagos’.
“In December, I will be leading A WALK FOR PEACE to herald the healing of our land. Let me use this occasion to extend an open invitation to our youths, members of the diplomatic corps, civil society groups, students and the media, as well as other stakeholders to join me,” Sanwo-Olu said.
“Folarin Falana (Falz). Debo Adebayo (Mr. Marcaroni). Dele Farotimi. Temitope Majekodunmi. Segun Awosanya (Segalinks). Adetoun (Just Detoun). Seun Kuti. CP Hakeem Odumosu. CSP Yinka Egbeyemi. Join me on this historic march for our dear Lagos. Nobody will build this city for us.”
The governor’s speech reacts to the Judicial Panel of Enquiry report on EndSARS. The report, which has been a subject of controversy since its release on November 16, 2021, confirmed a massacre at the tollgate on October 20 and indicted the military and the government.
Netng asked Falz if he would be participating in the proposed peace walk, and he told us “no justice, no peace walk.”
In a series of tweets, he also said the suggestion of a “walk for peace” sounds like a joke and a very disrespectful one.
“People were murdered in cold blood, and absolutely no iota of justice has been served more than a year after. How can there be peace without justice?” Falz asked.
“In this same speech, you said, ‘To be a smart city, we first must be a just one’. Remember the young Nigerians that had their lives snatched away by weapons wielded by our own armed forces? You want to sweep that under the carpet? Is that how to establish a just city?”
He added that young Nigerians, till today, are still being constantly harassed and extorted by police officers.
A few days before the October 2020 protests, which became a defining moment in contemporary youth activism, the 31-year-old rapper and activist had led hundreds of protesters to walk the streets of Lekki on the morning of October 8, 2020, to demand an end to police brutality.
In October 2020, Neusroom and Netng polled 7,000 young Nigerians, asking them their choice of President for 2023. The poll returned Falz as the winner, with 70% of the votes following his active role in the EndSARS protests.
