Man dead following hostage situation involving bank robbery suspect: EPS

One man is dead following a hostage situation involving a suspected bank robber in the city’s northeast.

In a statement just before 5 p.m., Edmonton police spokeswoman Cheryl Voordenhout said a man allegedly fled the scene of a bank robbery at an ATB Financial branch in the area of 127 Avenue and 97 Street.

The man then entered a residence not associated with him at 83 Street and 130 Avenue At the time there was an unconfirmed number of hostages in the house.

In an update later Monday evening, Voordenhout said following efforts by professional negotiators a woman who was the lone hostage was released unharmed at around 5:30 p.m.

“Police then entered the residence at approximately 6 p.m. and found a 36-year-old male suspect deceased. There were no others in the home,” she said.

The director of law enforcement was notified of the death and determined the investigation will remain with the Edmonton Police Service.
