The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has entreated the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare to ensure his tenure rids the country of police officers who indulge in criminal activities.

According to the Asantehene, although Ghana has witnessed the efforts of many good officers committed to preserving the law and protecting citizens, some few bad nuts continue to drag the reputation of the Police Service in the mud.

He therefore made his plea when the IGP paid a courtesy call on him as part of his tour of the Ashanti Region.

“While there are very good police officers, there are few others who indulge in criminal activities. The bad ones have brought the name of the police service into disrepute. They use the ammunition given to them to engage in criminal activities. Ensure that this is addressed,” he stated.

In response to the concerns of the Asantehene, IGP Dr George Akuffo Dampare stated that his administration will by hook or crook ensure the activities of such officers are brought to a halt in order to redeem the image of the Service.

According to the IGP, it is his wish to present a better Police Service to his successor once he is done serving the people of Ghana.

“With God on our side, we want to ensure that whoever succeeds this administration will have a better police service to work with. We want it to be better because if the next administration has a better understanding of the job, whatever we have started will be continued by them.”

“We are thus praying to God to help us do better than our predecessors such that the police can redeem its image,” Dr. Damapare added.

Meanwhile, as part of measures to ensure easy identification, promote professionalism and curb indiscipline among personnel, the IGP has said his administration will ensure that police officers wear name tags on their uniforms.
