When LadyBuckit And The Motley Mopsters was announced, it was a revolutionary and ambitious production.
Creating the first feature-length animation film in Nigeria was no easy feat. It took a village of talented people, spearheaded by Blessing Amidu, the Founder/CEO of Hot Ticket Productions and executive producer; Bisi Adetayo, the director and filmmaker Chris Ihidero, the consulting producer.
As they delighted families during the 2020 holidays when it was released on Friday, December 11, 2020, LadyBuckit And The Motley Mopsters marked another milestone in Nollywood as it received the 2021 AMAA for Best Animation on Sunday, November 28, 2021.
Blessing Amidu speaking with Netng, said they are still basking in the wins as it’s a surreal moment for everyone.
“It didn’t sink at first. We’ve just been celebrating. It’s just the beginning. This film has motivated other people, made them know that it’s okay to showcase their works. It’s a bright future for animation in Nigeria. I see us surpassing this. I see people doing better. We’ve learnt from our mistakes, and we know that it will only be bigger from now on. Right now, for us, we’re consolidating and reaping the benefits, but I can tell you for a fact that when the sequel comes, it’s going to be amazing.”
Chris Ihidero, the consulting producer of the film, shared his excitement about the award win with Netng, saying, “It’s an amazing recognition of a major milestone in Nollywood history, seeing as LadyBuckit is the first animation feature that the industry has produced. The award is appreciated. We are grateful for the recognition. I am proud to have led the production of the film along with Blessing Amidu, who is the executive producer and my co-producer who brought me on the project.”
Speaking on if he would stretch his wings into more animation projects, he said, “I am interested in doing animation further. Adebisi Adetayo is an amazing animator, and we were lucky to have him on the project.”
LadyBuckit And The Motley Mopsters, which also received the award for Best Animation at the 2021 AFRIFF Globe Awards, follows the story of a brilliant, precocious Bukky, who, on a journey of self-discovery, transforms into a bucket. She soon settles in with the Motley Mopsters and is swept up in a tide of friendship and excitement.
It shows us the limitless possibilities of what can be done with animation in Nigeria, of which Lady Buckit is just the tip of the iceberg.
