Premier Jason Kenney and Alberta Health Minister Jason Copping are to provide a COVID-19 update Tuesday afternoon where it’s expected the government will discuss relaxing COVID-19 restrictions ahead of Christmas.

The 3:30 p.m. press conference will also include chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw . Details on a plan to release additional rapid test kits to the general public are also expected.

Last week Kenney said the government was looking at “some modest, common-sense relaxation of measures” for Christmas.

The province’s current state of public health emergency is slated to lapse on Tuesday. Kenney said the hope is that total ICU admission will have dropped to 173, making it possible for the province to return to 100 per cent surgical capacity.

“I don’t want to create a situation where we have millions of Albertans violating the rules when we were not in a current emergency situation,” he said.

The Premier also promised news Tuesday on a plan to make more rapid testing kits available to the general public.

As of last week province has deployed about six million tests and has about 5.5 million in inventory, according to Alberta Health.
