Colombo, December 14 (newsin.asia): The Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa had a phone conversation with the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina Wazed on the occasion of the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (1920-1975) and the 50 th.anniversary of the independence of Bangladesh.
In a tweet, Rajapaksa said: “We discussed areas both nations can work together to strengthen bilateral relations to mutually benefit our people. Bangladesh has been a true & sincere friend of #lka & we greatly value our historic friendship.”
Cancer Care
As part of the celebrations of the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the golden jubilee of the independence of Bangladesh, the Bangladesh High Commission in Sri Lanka, in association with the Palliative Care Trust and the Cancer Care Association of Sri Lanka organized a function in Matara, south Sri Lanka.
At the function, the Bangladesh High Commission awarded the “Bangabandhu Memorial Grant” to the Palliative Care Trust and gave Golden Jubilee Scholarships to “Blooming Flowers” the Cancer Care Association of Sri Lanka.
The Bangabandhu Memorial Grant was given to 100 cancer patients and their families members. Golden Jubilee Scholarships were given to 50 children of cancer patients from various parts of Sri Lanka.
The Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr.A.K.Abdul Momen spoke on the occasion through a video link about the political ideas of Bangabandhu Shiekh Mujibur Rahman and stressed the need to pursue the ideal of working for the welfare humanity. He described the event in Matara as a remarkable tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and a demonstration of the warmth and depth of the friendship between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
The Bangladesh High Commissioner, Tareq Md.Ariful Islam, appreciated the noble work of the Palliative Care Trust and the Cancer Care Association of Sri Lanka and said that the Bangladesh High Commission would continue to support the humanitarian efforts of the associations.
Dr.Samadhi Rajapaksa, chairman of the National Authority for Tobacco and Alcohol and founder of the Cancer Care Association of Sri Lanka, thanked the Bangladesh High Commission for its munifecence.
