We’re almost to the end of another year, and once again find ourselves saying “Well, that was crap.”

As we look back, we can almost map out the year via the memes we saw on Twitter, so – for your entertainment – here’s 2021 in memes.

1. Bernie’s snug Inauguration mittens and coat combo

Senator Bernie Sanders dressed for the winter weather when he attended the inauguration of President Joe Biden, and the image of him sitting bundled up and wearing mittens became the first viral meme of the year.

2. The GameStop game shop stock shock

Redditors deliberately drove up the price of a small business’ stock to mess with the hedge fund managers of Wall Street.

3. “You don’t have the authority, Jackie Weaver”

The clerk of Handforth Parish Council dealt with an overbearing man in the best way – by kicking him off the Zoom call.

4. The Weeknd’s Super Bowl performance

Singer Abel Tesfaye, more commonly known as The Weeknd, was one of the main attractions of this year’s Super Bowl entertainment, and his chaotic entrance grabbed the internet’s attention.

5. “I am not a cat”

Texas lawyer Rod Ponton accidentally turned up to a Zoom hearing with his cat filter on and couldn’t work out how to turn it off.

People reflected on what had changed in the year from hell.

7. Agatha’s wink from Wandavision

Kathryn Hahn’s character, Agnes – or Agatha Harkness – made an enormous comedy wink in Marvel’s Wandavision, and we were all hooked.

8. Oprah’s Harry and Meghan interview

During the tell-all, well, tell-some interview with Harry and Meghan, some of Oprah’s facial expressions proved highly memeable.

9. Trump looks fantastic

Conservative author and activist, Brigitte Gabriel, shared a photo showing the former president in his familiar golf gear at a Mar-A-Lago, adding that he looked ‘fantastic’.

10. RIP X – they would have loved …

Isaac H.P. posted a TikTok saying it’s a shame Henry VIII didn’t live longer because he would have loved watching Alvin and The Chipmunks. Tweeters ran with it.

The container ship that got stuck in the Suez Canal also got stuck in our collective consciousness.

12. Passive-aggressive Line of Duty
