Maltese lawmakers voted through a bill Tuesday that would allow the possession and consumption of limited quantities of cannabis in what is a first in the EU, reported the Times of Malta.
Other countries, like Portugal and the Netherlands, have decriminalized use of the drug. But the Maltese bill goes a step further, allowing users to carry up to seven grams of the drug in public, or store up to 50 grams of the dried product.
The bill — backed by the ruling Labour Party of Malta — was passed with 36 votes in favor and 27 votes against, the local newspaper reported.
Malta already allowed the medical use of cannabis in 2018. Now it becomes the first EU country to officially allow posession of the drug as momentum for legalization grows.
In Germany, the new coalition government has agreed to pass a law legalizing the sale of cannabis to adults for recreational purposes.
Under the rules, which have to be signed by President George Vella, cannabis users will be able to buy seeds or limited amount of products through not-for-profit “clubs.”
