LONDON — The U.K. has awarded New Year’s honors to a long list of British scientists for their contributions against the coronavirus pandemic.

England’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer Jonathan Van-Tam — famed for his elaborate analogies at COVID press conferences — and his counterparts in Wales and Scotland, Frank Atherton and Gregor Smith, have become knights, the government announced Friday.

Jenny Harries, head of the new U.K. Health Security Agency, and June Raine, chief executive of the drug regulator the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), have been made dames.

Two of the most popular British faces during the pandemic, England’s Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty and Chief Scientific Adviser Patrick Vallance, were honored with an Order of the Bath, which recognizes the work of senior civil servants.
