In a feverishly anticipated PMQs, Boris Johnson has finally admitted that he did indeed attend the ‘BYOB’ party in the garden of 10 Downing Street at the height of lockdown in May 2020.
But in a characteristic – and hilarious – twist, Johnson claimed that he didn’t realise it was a party, he thought it was a ‘work event’. A work event.
So 25 minutes later as it gradually dawned on him that the people around him were sharing nibbles and bottles of booze rather than PowerPoint presentations, he went back into his office.

And however stupid Johnson thought the British public were before he said this, it surely just went down several notches further.
His ‘work event’ defence prompted no end of mockery online and these 27 people surely said it best.

Look, we’ve all been there. Show up for a meeting at work, having been asked to bring booze, only to find hundreds of people there getting pissed up, just to figure out, 25 minutes later, that you’re actually at a party in your own garden.

I'm going to need a couple of stiff workplace events to get over this.

I think parties and work events CAN be very similar. For instance, I confused a drinks menu for a spreadsheet once. And also a seventh mojito for a pen.

(author unknown)That didn't happen.
And if it did, it wasn't that bad.
And if it was, that's not a big deal.
And if it is, that's not my fault.
And if it was, I didn't mean it.
And if I did, you deserved it.— James Oh Brien (@mrjamesob) January 12, 2022

Of course @BorisJohnson could have asked his wife, Carrie Johnson, who was with him and drinking (gin, I’m told), whether they were at a party, if he wasn’t sure

Anyone who has been to one of my parties is free to disagree but however bad they've been, I hope no has actually left one thinking they'd been at work
