For DJs, making a setlist requires much thought and precision. They are connected to the heart of what people want to hear and dictate the sounds that become major hits. So when legendary international DJ Jimmy Jatt listened to young Davido’s music for the first time, it was the beginning of something good.
In ‘We Rise: The Davido Story’, a documentary by Netng, DJ Jimmy Jatt shares how he felt when he heard a Davido song for the first time.
‘My first encounter with David, not David as a person but his music, it was Asa (Asika) who introduced him to me. At that time, Asa brought the demo tape of a guy who liked to make music. I felt like his music was good, no doubt. As a DJ, I entered it into my playlist, and it became a regular. ‘Back When’ was a big song. It wasn’t too long after that that I knew, “Oh, this is it”.’
10 years later, Davido is one of the biggest artistes out of Africa. When most people think of David, the first image that will likely pop up is a young musician working so hard to constantly climb up the ladder like most of his contemporaries with ‘grass to grace’ stories. But he didn’t rise from grass to grace. He was born into affluence, which is why his attitude to work leaves many in awe. Why’s the son of a billionaire working so hard? Many have asked, and others have also scorned him for that.
From his first album ‘Omo Baba Olowo: The Genesis’ released in 2012 to his latest album, ‘A Better Time’, Davido has developed a track record for releasing hits back-to-back. At the core of social credibility or status is worth and influence. Davido has the highest number of followers on Instagram in Nigeria – 22 million and is one of the highest-paid influencers in Nigeria, earning as high as $74,000 per post, according to a report by Africa’s only end-to-end communications and influencer marketing platform, Plaqad.
There’s more to Davido than meets the eye, and with ‘We Rise: The Davido Story’, Netng takes an in-depth dive into his life, family, and decade-long career.
The one-part documentary is available to stream on January 15, 2022, on thenet.ng/davido.
