The body of the 15-year-old was recovered by divers at 1.30pm today with a report not being prepared for the Coroner.

Meanwhile, New Year’s Day also proved to be an exceptionally busy one for NSW surf life savers with multiple rescues taking place.

Lifeguards and volunteers responded to dozens of serious incidents, with hot weather, challenging surf and large crowds said to be the cause of the challenging day.

Life savers managed to save a 41-year-old man who was dragged unconscious from the surf at North Palm Beach by giving him CPR for 40 minutes.

A baby who was found unresponsive at Cronulla also managed to regain consciousness after receiving first aid.

At Maroubra, six people were pulled from the water and needed treatment.

Surf Life Saving NSW President George Shales said the day was exceptionally demanding.

“We know that New Year’s Day is often a very tricky day for lifesavers and lifeguards across the state, but today was truly something else,” he said.

“The volume of incidents today and the courage and exceptional skill our volunteer lifesavers have shown today has demonstrated just how outstanding the lifesaving community truly is. We have definitely saved multiple lives today.”

With further warm weather predicted tomorrow, Surf Life Saving NSW is encouraging beach-goers to act cautiously.
