British anti-terrorism police arrested two teenagers on Sunday night after a gunman took four people hostage at a synagogue in the U.S. on Saturday, Greater Manchester Police said.

The gunman died after federal agents stormed the synagogue in Colleyville, Texas after a day-long siege. All the hostages were freed safely.

The FBI on Sunday identified the suspect as Malik Faisal Akram, a British citizen from Blackburn in the northwest of England. U.K. law enforcement is cooperating with U.S. authorities on the investigation and made arrests in Manchester.

“Two teenagers were detained in South Manchester this [Sunday] evening. They remain in custody,” Assistant Chief Constable Dominic Scally, for Counter Terror Policing North West, said. The pair cannot be identified for legal reasons.

“Police forces in the region will continue to liaise with their local communities, including the Jewish community, and will put in place any necessary measures to provide reassurance to them,” Scally added. The two teenagers will now be questioned.

U.S. President Joe Biden called the hostage-taking an “act of terror.”
