A man killed in Sydney's first fatal shark attack in nearly six decades has been identified as diving instructor Simon Nellist.

The 35-year-old was an ocean lover who spent much of his time in the sea and had been training for the Malabar ocean swim this weekend.

The event has been cancelled following the deadly attack.

Mr Nellist was swimming at Little Bay Beach in the city's east yesterday afternoon when he was attacked by the shark, thought to be a great white.

Mr Nellist has family in the UK and a girlfriend in Sydney.

Human remains were found yesterday about 4.30pm and witnesses were left reeling after the confronting incident.

The Department of Primary Industries is still searching for the animal, while lifeguards will continue to patrol beaches in the coming days.

Today SMART drumlines were installed across Sydney beaches and many from Sutherland Shire to Bondi remain closed.

Organisers of the Murray Rose Malabar Magic Ocean Swim said the decision to cancel the event was made out of safety and respect for Mr Nellist's loved ones.

"The organising committee extends our thoughts and prayers to the family of the swimmer who was so tragically taken yesterday," organisers said in a statement.
