Four men arrested over historic murder of Gold Coast father-of-two

Four men have been arrested in connection to the 2009 murder of Gold Coast father-of-two Omega Ruston.

Queensland Police and NSW Police arrested three men in New South Wales and one man in Queensland overnight.

The 32-year-old construction worker and father-of-two Omega Ruston was driving along the Gold Coast Highway on January 26, 2009, when he was shot dead in a suspected road rage incident.

A 43-year-old man wanted on a Queensland arrest warrant was arrested by Australian Federal Police as he tried to board a plane to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, about 8pm last night.

Officers searched the man and his luggage and found more than $25,000 in cash.

He was taken to Mascot Police Station.

Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith said this arrest "triggered a number of phases".

Police stopped a black Toyota Hilux travelling on the M4 at Huntingwood "in excess of 140 km/hr" just before midnight last night.

The 37-year-old male driver was arrested and taken to Parramatta Police Station.

After further investigations, a 39-year-old man was arrested at a home on Fairway Drive, Norwest, just before 1.30am today.

All three men have since been charged with outstanding arrest warrants on behalf of Queensland Police.

They will appear at local courts later today.

Queensland Police Detective Acting Superintendent Chris Ahearn said the men are allegedly linked to organised crime groups.

"Police will allege the three male persons are linked to Sydney middle eastern crime syndicates and Gold Coast and Sydney chapters of outlaw motorcycle gangs," he said.

Queensland Police are seeking the men's extradition back to Queensland to face murder charges.

Detectives will allege the three men were in a maroon sedan which was seen stopping near Mr Ruston's 2001 Holden Rodeo on the side of the highway in 2009.

They will also allege two shots were fired from the rear passenger side window of the maroon sedan where one of the bullets fatally struck Mr Ruston.

"Police will allege the firearm used in the shooting of Omega Ruston is an identical ballistic match to a firearm used in a drive-by style shooting at the west Sydney ink tattoo parlour," Detective Acting Superintendent Ahearn said.

Four men were arrested over the 2009 murder of Omega Ruston.

Queensland Police arrested and charged a 45-year-old man Gold Coast man in Brisbane as an accessory after the fact to murder.

Officers will allege the man helped the offenders after the murder had been committed.

He will appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court later today.

The brother of the victim, Nick Ruston, thanked NSW and Queensland Police for their ongoing investigations.

"Thirteen years ago Omega was taken from our world, words cannot describe the pain and anguish that have been experienced following his death," he said.

"Hopefully, with this latest turn of events, we are able to finally get some closure."

Detective Acting Superintendent Ahearn has also appealed for anyone with information about the shooting to come forward, adding a $250,000 reward is on offer for information that leads to the "apprehension and conviction" of those responsible for Mr Ruston's murder.
