The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has confirmed to Netng that it raided the home of up-and-coming music artistes Mohbad and Zinoleesky and recovered cannabis and molly from their apartment and car.
A video of NDLEA operatives arresting the Marlian Nation signees at their home surfaced on social media on Thursday morning with many users claiming the NDLEA operatives raided the apartment in the middle of the night.
Femi Babafemi, NDLEA spokesperson, said the agency acted based on information.
“We raided their apartment based on information that they had drugs, and indeed, we recovered cannabis and molly from their home and car,” Babafemi told Netng in a phone conversation on Thursday morning.
The possession of cannabis is illegal in Nigeria and punishable by a minimum of 12 years in prison.
Netng could not reach Marlian Nation boss, Naira Marley, for comments.
Marley, who has also previously run into trouble with law enforcement and is presently standing trial for alleged fraud, reacted to the arrest in a post on his IG story.
“I’m so fucking angry RN walahi,” he wrote.
Controversial up-and-coming singer Portable also condemned the arrest of the artistes. In a video shared on his IG story, he threatened to go physical against any operative that tries to arrest him for possession of cannabis,
“You can’t kill us the way you killed Fela. Can’t we smoke cannabis in our father’s house again?” he asked.
“If you near my side, you go collect. We have local gun and diabolical ring,” he threatened.
The arrest has also sparked outrage on social media on Thursday morning. In about 20 tweets and Instagram comments seen by Netng, some fans were criticising NDLEA for the raid.
“So the fact that they are notable people we should permit them to commit a crime?” Babafemi asked in reaction to the social media outrage. “Were they there when they were arrested? Their fans were not there when they were begging behind the scene, but they are ranting on social media.”
He said the agency has embarked on a series of enlightenment campaigns to urge the public to stay away from drugs. “As we educate them, we also need to do some law enforcement to send a strong message that the fact that we are educating you to do the right thing, we still have the responsibility to arrest anybody found with these things.”
Asked when the artistes will be charged, Babafemi said an investigation is ongoing.
