The European Broadcasting Union will ban Russia from entering this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, following the country’s military invasion of Ukraine.
In a statement released Friday, the organization said its decision was based on concerns that “the inclusion of a Russian entry in this year’s Contest would bring the competition into disrepute.”
“We remain dedicated to protecting the values of a cultural competition which promotes international exchange and understanding,” the statement continued.
Russia has participated in the contest since 1994 and won in 2008 with the ballad “Believe.”
The final of the 2022 competition will be held in Turin, Italy on May 14.
