Samsung has made the first major smartphone announcement of the year, with it’s 2022 flagship smartphone breaking cover overnight in a global virtual announcement.
The new Samsung Galaxy S22 range features three phones, the Galaxy S22, the S22+ and the S22 Ultra.
While the S22 is the smallest and most affordable — starting at $1249, the S22+ will be the bulk seller starting at $1549 and featuring a larger 6.6 inch screen compared to the 6.1 inches of the S22.
At the top end of the series — starting at $1,849 — will be the new Galaxy S22 Ultra which has a vastly different design, with a more wrapped-to-edge screen measuring in at a huge 6.8 inches.
It’s unique look is designed to both set it apart, and appeal directly to the many loyal fans of the Samsung Galaxy Note series of smartphones.
There has not been a new “note” announced for a couple of years now, with that premium end of the Samsung Mobile offering taken up by their Foldable range of Z series smartphones.
However, today’s announcement of the Galaxy S22 Ultra will create a rush of buyers from previous Note devices who have longed for an updated smartphone, featuring the latest technologies like the 120Hz refresh display, advanced cameras, but also with the included S-Pen stylus.
A feature famous on the Note range of devices, the S-Pen slides into the base of the phone so it’s never lost, and allows for simple gestures and on-screen note-taking. Handwriting recognition now at a level so advanced that it really is fast becoming an alternative to pen and paper for many, converting handwriting to text allowing easy minute taking in meetings or list making to be shared by text message.
All three phones feature a 4nm processor offering snappy performance, the battery in each is more than enough for a day or more usage, but once again the camera remains the key battlefield for smartphones.
In what is all but an admission that all smartphones today take great photos in the best lit areas, the low-light photography capabilities of the Samsung Galaxy S22 range are core to the company’s approach, calling night-time photography “nightography”. Night mode photos are enhanced with better software processing, and a 23 per cent larger sensor letting more light into the camera.
Garry McGregor, Vice President, Mobile Division, Samsung Electronics Australia says the “S22 and S22+ bring the best for those who want to create — dynamic cameras, enhanced image processing and bright displays make for a beautifully designed and powerful smartphone.
“The S22 Ultra brings the very best of S Series and the DNA of Note together in a whole new experience. The built-in S-Pen is set to unleash new productivity and creative possibilities.
“We know Australians’ smartphone usage has increased by 40 per cent after another year of prolonged pandemic living. Because of this and extended working from home arrangements, 44 per cent of people purchasing a new smartphone are buying premium because they need higher performance devices.
“People also use their smartphone for escapism through entertainment and other leisure activities so having a device that powers both work and play has never been more important.”
Samsung is offering the devices direct on their own website, along with all major retailers and telcos. The telcos are competing hard for new and returning customers this year, with loads of special added offers like a free Tablet for pre-orders at Telstra, or huge bonus credit on trade-ins at Vodafone.
Seems there’s never been a better, or more competitive time, to buy a new smartphone.
