Two Canadian designers have joined forces to make over a special space at YWCA Edmonton’s Camp Yowochas.

Leigh-Ann Allaire Perrault, a regular Cityline contributor, and Christina Dennis, social media’s DIY Mommy, are collaborating on a complete refresh of the Fireside Lounge, a room used year-round for camps and healing retreats.

Perrault and Dennis, who will reveal the makeover during their appearance at the 2022 Edmonton Home and Garden Show, are volunteering their time and acquiring donations by leveraging their connections.

“We’ve been meeting virtually, and YWCA staff have walked us through the space. I’m looking forward to coming to Edmonton to pour in some sweat equity,” says Perrault.

Known for her frugal approach to design refresh, Perrault says the space functions well and doesn’t require a major renovation. She’s starting with paint, her favourite medium, and as spokeswoman for Rust-Oleum, she was able to get the paint donated.

Using her knowledge of colour theory, which she taught for several years at Sheridan College in Toronto, Perrault says the right colours will help make the space relaxing and calming.

“Colour will help people lean into the healing elements of what the space is intended for,” she says.

Dennis, who has an audience of 1.2 million followers on YouTube alone, lives in the Edmonton area and received a resounding yes when she asked local contractor Divine Flooring to contribute to the project.

Ikea Canada is also donating to the Camp Yowochas makeover.

Dennis notes that she and Perrault think alike when designing with a tight budget in mind.

“Our DIY-infused brains work together. There have been times we’ve had the same idea at the same time,” she says.

Kristy Cairns, group manager of home show organizer Marketplace Events, says supporting the local community is a priority.

“We’re absolutely ecstatic to have connected Leigh-Ann, Christina and YWCA Edmonton. We cannot wait to see the final product revealed at the show. Finding functionality, great design and staying on budget isn’t only for homeowners.  This project will inspire anyone looking to upgrade or renovate any space,” she says.

Both ladies will be featured on the Main Stage during the four-day show, where they will each share DIY tips and answer audience questions.

The 2022 Edmonton Home and Garden Show runs March 24 to 27 at the Edmonton Expo Centre.
