After four weeks of auditions in search of the top finalists of the Nigerian Idol season 7, the top 12 promising music talents competing to be the next Nigerian Idol were revealed by the judges D’banj, Simi and Obi Asika on Sunday, March 13, 2022.
From the auditions, the thousands of contestants were narrowed down to 75 golden ticket holders who moved to the theatre week, where the number dropped to 50. The duet performances led to the elimination of 15 contestants, as 35 singers made it to the final round.
After an intense individual performance at the solo round by the 35 contestants, just 12 singers, considered the best among the promising talents, remain on Nigerian Idol as the show begins live rounds on Sunday, March 20, 2022.
The journey to the live rounds was tough, and it is expected to get more challenging as the top 12 get a chance to chase their dreams.
Here’s a background on each of the 12 contestants.
Abigail
Before auditioning for Nigerian Idol, Abigail had been on an international stage as a backup singer for one of Nigeria’s biggest music stars. She had always known she wanted to be a singer from childhood, and she got the support of her parents to chase her dream.
Abigail presently sings with a live band and is looking forward to having a great experience on the Nigerian Idol stage and connecting with the audience while having fun at it. She believes she will be the next Nigerian Idol because she is an ‘Idol’ musically and emits positive energy, light, and life.
Banty
Banty, a tech, music, and gaming enthusiast knew she wanted to be a singer because she always sang regardless of the task before her. Since she started singing at age eight, Banty has performed mainly in church. She prepares for performances in an unusual way, by jumping, staying in the sun and talking.
Inspired by Teyana Taylor, Banty can’t wait to start thrilling her fans and viewers on the Nigerian Idol stage. Like the other finalists, she believes she has all it takes to be crowned the next Nigerian Idol.
David Operah
David decided he would do music after realising it gives him peace, and he could make money from it. Since he started singing at age eight, he has been a regular singer at social and corporate events.
Before a performance, he stays calm and does a mental run-through of his performance. He believes his talent, consistency, and being intentional will stand him out to become the next Nigerian Idol. He looks forward to expressing himself on the Nigerian Idol stage and showing the world what he has to offer.
Debby
Debby, a music and fashion enthusiast from Edo State, took the decision to become a singer at age seven, after giving a performance that had almost everyone moved to tears.
Since then, she has kept her passion for music alive by constantly performing in church, lounges, and sharing her songs on social media. Her go-to ritual before any performance is simply to gurgle water, smile, and give herself pep talks.
Debby believes she will be the next Nigerian Idol because she’s got the singing ability and the personality to back it up.
Faith
Faith decided music was the path for her because she has found so much happiness from music since she started singing in the church choir in 2016.
FayDiamond, as she’s fondly called, sings mostly in church, concerts, and social media. She believes she will be the next Nigerian Idol because she’s got what it takes, and aside from being able to sing, she’s got the qualities of a star. FayDiamond is looking forward to growth, learning, and discovering new sides of herself on the Nigerian Idol stage.
Gerald
Although music, art, and travel are Gerald’s keen interests, he was convinced music was his calling because he always had the urge to sing almost anywhere and at any given chance.
Gee6ixx, as he’s fondly called, says a short prayer before any performance and handles pressure by working out and taking time to reflect. He performs mainly at concerts and believes, with his voice, charisma, confidence and personality, he’s on track to become the next Nigerian Idol.
Itohan
Itohan, an Economics student at the Rivers State University, is the youngest contestant on Nigerian Idol season 7. The 17-year-old has keen interest in singing, travelling, and experimenting with food. She knew she wanted to sing since she was little, and her parents affirmed this by telling her how she was sensitive to music and sound as a baby.
Itohan, who is also an instrumentalist, sings in church and school. She is looking forward to the euphoria of performing in front of her fans and her supporters. She believes she has the capacity to become the next Nigerian Idol, and it’s evident from her performance at the auditions, the theatre week and the final performance leading to the emergence of 12 finalists.
Joel
Joel, who defies speech disorder to become a singer, knew he wanted to be a singer when he heard himself, his dad, and brother sing. His interest in music has led him to perform in church, school, at events, and anywhere the opportunity presents itself.
Joel’s ritual before a performance is to stay silent. He is looking forward to overcoming himself, his set boundaries and limits. After working hard to get on the show, Joel believes he deserves to be the next Nigerian Idol and will not let self-doubt set in.
Jordan
Jordan, 22, is a student of the Ahmadu Bello University in Kaduna. He started singing at 12 and decided to go professional four years later. Aside from music production and songwriting, he also has a keen interest in basketball.
Jordan, who was outstanding at the auditions and theatre week, knew he wanted to be a singer because it is the only way he finds true expression of who he is. He sings at concerts, social events, and church. He is looking forward to the exposure Nigerian Idol will offer him.
Precious
Precious was 16 when she became convinced that her calling was music. She has performed at social events and musical concerts.
Inspired by Beyoncé, Precious is looking forward to learning new things and improving her musical abilities on the Nigerian Idol stage. She believes she will be the next Nigerian Idol because of her dedication to the music industry and the world at large.
Progress
After participating in a musical competition at the age of 16, Progress was convinced he would be a singer.
Progress, who draws inspiration from Jonathan McReynolds, believes he will be the next Nigerian Idol because he has what it takes and can represent the Nigerian Idol brand.
Aside from his dream to become the next Nigerian Idol, he is also looking forward to meeting the people who have inspired his musical career.
Zadok
Zadok is an entertainer and businessman who started singing a few years ago and does that everywhere. Before every performance, he makes sure he gets enough sleep and creates time for meditation.
Zadok believes he has a beautiful sound to share with the world that will make him the next Nigerian Idol. He’s looking forward to enjoying every moment while being in his element on the Nigerian Idol stage.
