At the end of Nigerian Idol season 7 auditions, 75 contestants got golden tickets which allowed them to go to the next round of the show out of thousands of hopefuls. The judges, Obi Asika, D’banj and Simi, supported by Toolz and Omawunmi, did a brilliant job narrowing the number of contestants down to the 75 people who made it to theatre week.

In the four weeks of the audition, the judges confirmed that the crop of talents that came to perform has been largely impressive. Of course, there were those who provided musical comic relief to its seriousness and gave the judges and viewers a reason to laugh.

Now to the business of the day: Theatre week. What is it about, and how does it shape the show.?

Nigerian Idol is about recognising the best out of all the talented hopefuls. During the auditions, contestants were allowed to choose and sing their own songs. Most of them predictably chose their most comfortable song either due to voice range, familiarity with the lyrics, the genre of music or because it was their favourite song. Nothing wrong with that, but it is not always going to be easy which is why theatre week is different.

During theatre week, the 75 singers who got golden tickets will be given specific songs to sing. In that period, those who do not impress the judges with their rendition will be dropped. Ultimately, the top ten singers who perform excellently will go to the finale, where they will slug it out in a much tougher music battle.
