Police are investigating a Queensland crash that killed two men, as members of the men's families call for answers.

Father-of four John Hodges was behind the wheel of a commodore when the vehicle flipped and crashed into a water pump on the D'Aguilar highway near Nanango, north-west of Brisbane, on Sunday.

The crash killed Mr Hodges and his best friend and brother-in-law, Jesse Madden instantly.

Mr Hodges' parents Laura and Steven Byron said they are still processing the devastating news.

"I am broken-hearted, it is devastating," Ms Byron said.

"We're just a day into it and it's still a case of shock.

"He is leaving behind four children, a partner, brothers… we have lost a big part of our family right now."

A 28-year-old man who had been in the back seat of the car survived and is being treated at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.

Police said they hope interviewing the man upon his recovery will provide clarity into what caused the crash.

9News understands detectives are investigating whether the group was drag racing and if another vehicle was involved.

Last night, two people were taken into custody for questioning but the pair have since been released.

Ms Byron is anxiously awaiting news from the ongoing police investigation and believes there is more to her son's death.

"They need to know what happened because this is no single-car accident," she said.

"There is more to this story, so please for the family come forward."
