It's alleged an unknown driver hit the man with his vehicle leaving him behind unconscious.

The 69-year-old Hampton man was rushed to the Alfred Hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.

Hall has two broken eye sockets, a broken collarbone and shoulder blade, bleeding on the brain and two fractures to his back.

Hall's son, Gavan said it was a difficult situation to comprehend.

"It's my dad, it's tough," he said.

"It was definitely a hit and run which is disgusting.

"He was riding along and he was cleaned up from behind and there were no signs of skid marks, no nothing and obviously he is in the Alfred in a pretty serious condition."

His 39-year-old son is pleading for the person responsible to come forward.

Victoria Police Senior Sergeant Ralph Walker said the man's injuries were life changing.

He said they believe the driver made no effort to stop at the scene to assist him.

"To strike someone, leave them on the road, to not render assistance, it is callous," he said.

"It's a 69-year-old rider, to not even to stop and assist, everyone has a responsibility as drivers and that's to stop and render assistance."

Hall is an avid cyclist and has travelled the world with his bike raising money for various charities.

He's a much loved member of the local cycling community.

"He's already keen to get back on the bike, I hope he can that's all for his sake it's his one love."

Police are hoping that anyone with CCTV or dash cam footage can come forward so they can identity the person responsible.
