In 2007, the music industry witnessed the emergence of a new voice from the West African Idol singing competition- Timi Dakolo.

Since taking home the ‘Win’ at the West African Idol singing competition in 2007, Timi Dakolo has kept the hearts of many warm with good music, proving he is more than the buzz that comes with winning a music competition and, much farther from a one-hit-wonder.

The Nigerian songwriter and music producer started professionally as an unsigned artist with no concrete record deal despite winning the Nigerian idol competition. More so, being an RnB singer in Nigeria at that time, was a risk many record labels weren’t ready to take because the Nigerian music community was more centered on an upbeat style of music.

However, Timi Dakolo stayed true to his art and his sound was preserved. The fame he earned from winning the West African Idol competition enabled him to secure a feature with Nigerian rapper MI Abaga on his first single ‘Heaven Please’ in 2009. The single went on to become a successful record being nominated for the Best High-Life video at the Nigerian Music Video Awards in 2014 and had 265 million streams across all streaming platforms, officially giving the Timi Dakolo sound a place in the Nigerian music industry and across the borders. Proving himself worthy of the title of the West African Idol win, the Timi Dakolo sound went on to produce more groundbreaking songs, like Iyawo Mi, Let it shine, The woman I love, There’s a cry, Great Nation, and many more.

Some of which include, Best Vocal Performance at the Headies- 2014, Nigeria Entertainment Award nominee for best song of the year- 2016, and The Entrepreneur Africa prize for music business-2019, The 2016 Headies award winner for Best R&B single, has lived up to his art and passion, releasing RnB singles that have gone on to make waves in the global music scene to date. His hit single ‘Iyawo mi’, released in 2014 is as many say ‘the ultimate love song’. From its release date till now, the song still melts the hearts of many, especially when played at wedding ceremonies. How a song of over six years still connects to the love experience of lovers, to date is fascinating. This has earned him the title, ‘The chorus leader of love’. Adding to his craft, the Timi Dakolo sound isn’t just about RnB. It is also centered on his service of honor, constantly giving a voice to the people, and standing for what is just in society.
