Exactly five years after making a wave with his viral online concert tagged #HallelujahChallenge, Nigerian Gospel artiste and minister at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Nathaniel Bassey, on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, inspired another trend about ‘Jesus’ that has gone viral across all social media platforms.

In June 2017, Bassey created a huge wave on social media when he started his #HallelujahChallenge, a one-hour midnight worship session on his Instagram page that ran for 30 days and had over 20,000 participants in one night.

Five years later, at 11:58 am on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, Bassey shared a picture on social media with the inscription ‘JESUS’, asking his 3.9 million followers on Instagram and Twitter to make it their profile picture by noon.

“Can we make this picture our profile picture and tweet at 12 noon? Let’s release the precious ointment over our land and nation. JESUS,” he tweeted.

Christians from across Nigeria and other parts of the world have joined the viral trend by using the picture with the name of Jesus as their display picture and status on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp, as instructed by Bassey.

About two hours after Bassey’s tweet, data obtained by Netng from PlaqadIQ revealed that ‘Jesus’ has had over 500,000 impressions with an estimated 500 tweets from 500 Twitter users in just two hours.

Pastor Enoch Adeboye of RCCG and the official Twitter handle of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry have also joined the trend by tweeting the picture. Jesus and Nathaniel Bassey are also at the top of trending topics on Twitter in Nigeria.

In a phone chat on Tuesday afternoon, Netng asked Bassey the rationale behind the trend; he initially said he would not like to talk about it but later asked the correspondent to send him an a text message because he was busy at the moment.

He’s yet to respond to the text message.

The Jesus trend is the latest in the series of viral trends Bassey has used to spread the gospel on social media. In May 2017, he also commenced #TheOneHourTongueChallenge, where he urged his followers to pray by speaking in tongues.
