#BETAwards: Tems Wins Her First Major Award And It’s BET Best International Act

Tems has been announced winner of the BET Awards 2022 Best International Act.

She beat Firebox DML and other nominees which include Dave from UK, Dinos (France), Fally Pupa (DR Congo), Little Simz (UK) and Major League DJZ (South Africa) to win the first major award of her career in the early hours of Monday, June 27, 2022 (WAT).

The BET Awards celebrate Black excellence in music, culture and sports. The 2022 event held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

Earlier at the event, Tems had won Best Collaboration with Wizkid’s ‘Essence’ featuring Justin Bieber.

Essence was up against ‘Every Change I Get’ by DJ Khaled ft Lil baby and Lil Durk; ‘Family Ties’ by Baby Seem ft Kenderick Lamar; ‘Whole Lotta’ by Bia ft Nicki Minaj; ‘Way 2 Sexy’, Drake ft Future and Young Thug, and ‘Kiss me More’ by Doja Cat ft SZA.

Nigeria was duly represented at the 2022 BET Awards as Pheelz and Firebox DML delivered electrifying performances at the event widely adjudged culture’s biggest night.

Other Nigerian artistes who have won the Best International Act include 2Baba, D’banj, Ice Prince, Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy who won the award for the third time in 2021.

From featuring on Wizkid’s ‘Essence’ which got a Grammy nomination and won the Best Song of the Year and Best Collaboration at the 2021 AFRIMMA awards, to ‘Fountains’, a track off Drake’s sixth studio album, ‘Certified Lover Boy’, Tem’s career has experienced a complete turn around in one year.

Tems also had her debut at the 2021 NET Honours winning the award for Most Played Song – Alternative for her hit single ‘Damages’.

Born Temilade Openiyi on June 11, 1995, to a British dad and Nigerian mom in Lagos, Tems spent the first few years of her life in England before moving back to Nigeria with her mom after her parents divorced when she was about five years old.

Tems wrote her first song when she was six years old.
