Sound Sultan, 44, died of Angioimmunoblastic T-Cell Lymphoma (AITL) on Sunday, July 11, 2021, and was buried the same day in Brooklyn, New York.

To commemorate this remembrance, we have compiled tributes from his friends and colleagues at the evening of music, poetry, comedy and talk organised by NECLive in partnership with the Fasasi family, friends and his colleagues on Saturday, July 24, 2021.

Here’s what they said about him:

“I’ve never seen somebody so creative, so gifted. The guy na scientist, artist, everything combined together. That’s just the way he was. I see it reflecting in his kids already. It’s just amazing that one human being could have so much love in his heart. I dare anybody for anywhere to speak any negative thing about Sultan. I won’t find anybody in the whole world.”

MI Abaga
“Sound Sultan was different, and I want to say to his kids that you can be proud that you were raised by a good man. By somebody that everyone that touched him cannot say one single bad word about.”

“A lot of things have been said about Sound Sultan, and the summary of everything is, Sultan was a great guy. He was an amazing human being, inside and outside. He cared deeply about everyone and was genuine on many levels. He was funny, and he always made people feel good around him.”

Olisa Adibua
“What gives me joy is that Sultan was celebrated while he was alive. We enjoyed him, we appreciated him, and his legacy will live on. On a personal level, I can’t tell you when we met or how we met, but I know that my journey, not just in the music or entertainment industry, my journey in life has been linked with Sultan.”

Chigurl
“Sound Sultan was a man who put death to shame. He lived a life that put death to shame, and death is not the victor here. Death has not won anything. God gave us an angel for 40 something odd years, and the God that gave him to us decided to take him back.”

Richmond Osuji
“Sultan filled a gap…not just with his remarkable talent, which he shared with us as a singer, songwriter, rapper, comedian, actor, musician, record producer, executive producer and basketball club co-owner, but also as a friend to those who had the honour of knowing him, and as a respected family man. A man who, for the many years of his fame and reign in this industry, had no vice associated with him.”

Sound Sultan was a social commentator, comedian, entertainer, actor, musician and sports enthusiast while he was alive. His posthumous project, “Reality Chq”, produced by ID Cabasa, comes out today, July 11, 2022 and can be accessed on all streaming platforms.

The singer who used his music for education and social commentary may not be here with us physically, but his legacies will endure for years to come.
