The Sound of Hair Braided: A dynamic electronic sound sorcerer, Matthew Cardinal is in bands nêhiyawak and Wayfinding, and his solo album Asterisms was one of 2020’s best. But on Saturday afternoon north of Ocicwan Contemporary Art Centre, he’s doing a performance art piece. Through gentle movements, layering sound through a modular synthesizer, Cardinal will slowly braid his hair allowing the ethereal sounds to reverberate, amplifying a quiet moment. “A soft wonderment considers how our ancestors connected to the act through sound, touch and feeling,” notes his artist statement. “Rippling generous acts of love and tenderness through generations while weaving together the spirit of listening.” Read More
