The change indicates the decrease in the overall risk level of travelling to Sri Lanka from “avoid non-essential travel” to “exercise a high degree of caution”.

The Canadian High Commission in Sri Lanka advised Canadian travellers to exercise a high degree of caution in Sri Lanka due to the economic crisis which has led to shortages of basic necessities including fuel, food, and medicines.

Sri Lanka is experiencing a severe economic crisis which has led to shortages of basic necessities including medicines, fuel, and food. Local authorities are rationing electricity, resulting in power outages.

Since April 2022, there have been several protests throughout the country. In Colombo, some protests led to violent clashes between protestors and security forces.

Security forces have used crowd control measures such as tear gas and water cannons to control crowds. Further protests may occur. Even peaceful demonstrations can escalate quickly and turn violent at any time. They can also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transportation, the revised travel advisory added.
