A middle-aged man known as Austine Biggy allegedly committed suicide yesterday at Umunwalo Irete, Owerri West local government area of Imo State.
The deceased who hailed from Awo- Idimili in Orsu local government area was presumed to have hanged himself in the early hours of yesterday when he was seen hanging from a ceiling fan in his apartment.
A resident, Deacon Dan Opara, told LEADERSHIP that no suicide note was found on him, but said the action might not be unconnected with the harsh economy.
According to him, Biggy’s financial challenges were seemingly numerous as the wife had allegedly absconded, leaving him with a child.
Opara noted that the motive behind the action however remained unknown as the man was reported to be healthy when last seen by neighbours.
A neighbour who pleaded anonymity said a co-tenant had knocked several times without response but rather perceived a strange odour suspected to be chemical from within.
“It was at that point that the neighbours forced the door open only to find him dead, with foam and blood in his mouth and nostrils. It is unfortunate that the young man decided to commit suicide.
“For some time now he had been behaving like someone who had a mental health problem,” he said.
Police public relations officer Michael Abattam confirmed the incident, describing it as unfortunate.
