A young woman is believed to have been retrieving a phone when she was struck by a roller coaster at the Melbourne Royal Show this afternoon.
She has been rushed to hospital in a critical condition.
“Officers are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and a crime scene has been established,” Victoria Police said in a statement.
“It appears at this early stage the woman, believed aged in her 20s, may have walked on and entered the track to try and retrieve a dropped phone before she was hit by a roller coast carriage, about 5.45pm.
“Sadly the woman was then found injured on the ground.
“Detectives from the Yarra Crime Investigation Unit are attending the scene and will work with WorkSafe to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
It was initially believed the woman may have fallen from the roller coaster.
Melbourne Royal Show said it had confirmed that “no one has fallen from the ride” but it wasn’t immediately clear what had caused the woman’s significant injuries.
9News reporter Elisabeth Moss said the entire section of the show surrounding the ride had been cordoned off.
