CHICAGO (CBS) — A man was shot and wounded on a CTA Red Line train on the city’s South Side Wednesday evening.

Police said a 31-year-old man was seen walking off a Red Line train at the Cermak-Chinatown stop with a gunshot wound to the neck.

The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, police said.

The victim said he was shot on a train between the Sox-35th and Cermak-Chinatown stops.

The man was clearly bleeding when he got off the Chicago Transit Authority train. He managed to walk down the platform to ground level – where he collapsed.

A Chicago firehouse is located a block away at 212 W. Cermak Rd. Paramedics rushed to the scene.

As CBS 2’s Jermont Terry reported, it remained unclear Wednesday night who fired the shot. It is not known whether the victim got into an altercation with someone on the train, or of a bullet hit him randomly while riding.

The man was not being fully cooperative with police late Wednesday.

Red Line trains bypassed the Cermak-Chinatown stop for about an hour and a half. Service was back to normal by 10 p.m.

We are told Chicago Police are reviewing CTA surveillance to see how the shooting happened – and whether they can determine a description of the shooter.
