Nigerian artistes in the past year have made significant impacts in the American music industry, with Tems topping the Billboard Hot 100 charts with a feature on Future’s single and Wizkid cracking the top 10 Hot 100 charts with ‘Essence’.
The significant success these artistes and others have made has led the American Music Awards to create an Afrobeats category alongside categories like Favourite Rock Song and Favourite Kpop Artiste.
For the 2022 AMAS, Tems is the most nominated Nigerian artiste leading with four nominations. She was nominated for R&B Song of the Year for ‘Essence’, Collaboration of the Year and Rap Song of the Year for Future’s ‘Wait For You’ featuring Drake and Favourite Afrobeats Artiste.
Wizkid had two nominations. He is nominated for the R&B Song of the Year for ‘Essence’ ft Tems and Favourite Afrobeats Artiste.
Other Nigerian artistes nominated include Fireboy DML, Burna Boy, and Ckay.
This is the first time Nigerian artistes have gotten an American Music Awards nomination. The fan-voted award show is slated for November 20, 2022, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, US.
