Nigerian music stars 2Baba, Burna Boy, K1 De Ultimate and Teni were among the personalities awarded the Nigerian National Honour by President Muhammadu Buhari, at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, on Tuesday, October 11, 2022.
In total, 437 Nigerians were awarded in various categories. 2Baba, K1 De Ultimate, and Teni were conferred with the Member Of The Order Of The Niger (MON) award, while Grammy winner Burna Boy was conferred the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) honour.
It’s the first time in years that music artistes are being conferred a national honour since the likes of Victor Uwaifo and King Sunny Ade received the honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) and Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) honour respectively.
The Nigerian National Honour is conferred on Nigerians and friends of Nigeria every year to honour those who have rendered service to the benefit of the nation.
The honour, which entitles 2Baba, K1 and Teni to use the title of MON behind their names and Burna Boy the title of MFR, is the latest in the list of honours for the music stars.
2Baba, one of the music stars that paved the way for Nigerian artistes to thrive in the international scene, has gone far and beyond to fly the Nigerian flag so high on the world stage. In over 17 years of his career, he has received numerous awards, including the MTV Europe Music Award as Best African Act, the BET Award for his musical work, four MTV Africa Music Awards as Best Male, the MOBO Award for Best African Act, and the KORA Award as Best African Act, among many others.
Efe Omorogbe, 2Baba’s manager and Founder, Buckwyld Media Network, who received the award on behalf of the music icon at the ceremony in Abuja, told Netng that the National Honour must mean a great deal to anyone deserving and 2Baba is no different.
“The formal recognition of his immense contribution towards the growth of the creative industry and the nation in general by way of the National Honour, Member of the Order of the Niger, is indeed gratifying,” he said.
Omorogbe added that the national honour would also serve as inspiration to other hard working Nigerians and further motivation to 2Baba.
“Recognition by one’s own country is always special,” he told Netng on Tuesday night.
The honour is timely for K1 De Ultimate as the King of Fuji Music celebrates 50 years on stage in July 2022.
The singer, who started making music professionally in 1975, is one of the leading fuji acts in Nigeria with multiple accolades to his name including The Headies Hall of Fame in 2013.
With a Grammy award in the past year, Burna Boy has broken multiple records, including winning the Best Global Album at the 2021 Grammys for his album ‘Twice As Tall’. He has also sold out multiple concert venues like the 20,789-capacity Madison Square Garden, 20,000 capacity O2 Arena and more.
Teni, the only female singer among the honourees, has been enjoying rave reviews since she broke into the Nigerian music scene in 2016. She further consolidated her place as a star to watch out for with her hit single Uyo Meyo which she released in 2018, and has won multiple awards, including The Headies Best Recording of the Year 2019, Soundcity MVP Award, and Best New Artist, among others.
