Thriller series are not the typical genre of movies Nigerian filmmakers would create, but Nollywood filmmakers have been experimenting with thriller movies and have created some of the biggest thriller films in Africa in the past year.
Movies like King of Boys, Blood Sisters, Brotherhood have broken box office records, an achievement James Omokwe is replicating with Showmax’s limited thriller series, Diiche.
The series tells the story of Diiche, an A-list actress, who becomes a prime suspect in a high-profile murder investigation over the death of Nnamdi, her fiancé. As the search for Nnamdi’s killer kicks off, Diiche tries to prove her innocence.
Here are some lessons to learn from the first two episodes of the six-part thriller series.
Men Are Wicked
When we were introduced to Nnamdi in the first episode, we saw him as a loving partner who loved Diiche enough to propose to her. One episode in, we find out he proposed to her to take advantage of her popularity for his next film. Aren’t men scum?
Village People Are Real
For two episodes, Diiche has been experiencing these bad headaches with the sounds of people drumming in her head. Instead of going to church to pray, she thinks it will go away. Her village people are playing drums in her head, and she is using drugs.
Avoid Marrying Into Families That Do Not Like You
Nnamdi’s mum had always had an issue with her son’s relationship with Diiche, but Diiche, like every other millennial, thinks love conquers all. As soon as her son dies, she blames Diiche and even spreads a video online calling her a murderer. The moral lesson: avoid families that don’t like you.
Flee From Fetish People
As soon as we saw Nnamdi’s mother, she was raving about her son’s protection beads. The next time, she was at a herbalist’s house, and the time after that, she was pouring white powder in her son’s office to ‘protect’ him. Despite all that, he still died and an innocent young lady is being dragged. Avoid fetish people o!
Nigerian Police Will Never Change
When inspector Kazeem came into the picture and started tampering with evidence without gloves, I already knew he would be a pain in the ass. Thanks for the new transfer, Inspector Ijeoma, who continually insists on following protocol and common sense. At least she shows us that the Nigerian police have a chance to change for the better.
