It is that time of the year when filmmakers, storytellers, actors, creatives, film directors, writers, cinematographers, and film lovers gather to celebrate excellence in Africa’s film industry. The 11th edition of the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) is here and there’s so much to look forward to.
The festival commences on November 6, 2022, though events kick off on November 5, with The Oscar Day at AFRIFF, and will run through the 12th of November 2022.
This year’s festival is set to be the largest gathering of film professionals and enthusiasts in Africa and is packed with mouthwatering features. Here are some of the activities you can look forward to enjoying;
Movie Screenings: What’s a film festival without some epic movie screenings? From the opening psychological horror ‘Nanny’ produced by Amazon Prime Video to the African premiere of Marvel Studios ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, AFRIFF this year is bursting at the seams with an array of movies to be screened. Other movies to look out for include ‘Almajiri’, a film based on true stories as it affects millions of out-of-school children in Nigeria and other countries who are victims of trafficking, and ‘Hellride’ by Uche Odoh, which follows the story of a female cab driver in Lagos.
Panel Discussion: There will be several panel discussions at the festival and these will cover both globally relevant industry topics like: Wakanda Forever – The Journey, Breaking the boundaries of storytelling, The Making of Nollywood Blockbuster, and Film Financing: Equity Investors In Conversation with Filmmakers.
Some of the speakers at these panels include Ryan Coogler; Director of Marvel’s Black Panther, Mr. Lawrence David Foldes; a long-standing member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and Aisha Umar Mumuni; MTN Chief Digital Services Officer. There is a lot more to AFRIFF than just the thrills of movies.
MTN Virtual Reality Station: It is no news that MTN has launched 5G technology in Nigeria and at this year’s AFRIFF, festival attendees will get to experience the power of 5G at the VR/Gaming station. The low latency of 5G technology has already been deployed to facilitate the first-ever hologram address in West Africa and its applications in gaming, and virtual reality is definitely one to anticipate. The station is expected to give the festival a state-of-the-art feel and deliver experiential moments to the audience. MTN is a big sponsor of AFRIFF this year.
The Oscar Day: The Oscar Award is another major highlight set to feature at AFRIFF in 2022. The Oscar day is dedicated to showing filmmakers a guide to participating and achieving success at the world-acclaimed premiere film award, The Oscars, by enlightening them about the nitty-gritty of the criteria of film submission at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), “The Oscars.”
Masterclasses on filmmaking: Over 11 masterclasses and workshops are set to hold at Africa International Film Festival. Facilitators include Lawrence David Foldes, Tunde Babalola, Nicholas Weinstock, Obi Elemonye, Nickola Medi, Ryan Coogler, Ronya Man, Jeremy Zimmerman. Eno Umoh, Lawrence David Foldes, Shawn Faqua, and many more. These masterclasses will cover topics on writing, directing, producing, distribution, creative sound editing, NFTs, pitch presentation, and other juicy courses. Aspiring filmmakers will greatly benefit from these sessions.
