China’s former President Jiang Zemin, who rose to the leadership in the wake of the crackdown against the Tiananmen Square protest, died on Wednesday aged 96.
State media reported that Jiang died of leukemia in Shanghai.
Jiang’s death comes as European Council President Charles Michel is set for a meeting with current leader Xi Jinping on Thursday.
