A Gold Coast family is counting their lucky stars after narrowly avoiding being hit by a car that came crashing into their lounge room on Saturday.

They got the fright of their lives as a sedan careered into their living room, jumping out of the way with a second to spare.

Moments before impact, Chris and his mum were standing where the Ford Falcon sedan became wedged.

"I grabbed my mum, yanked her to go back and then I ran," Chris told 9News.

Out of corner of his eye, Chris watched as the elderly driver accelerated across the intersection, before smashing through their car port and into the house.

"Single occupant of the vehicle and 84-year old female who seemed to have a medical episode," Jane James from Queensland Ambulance Service told 9News.

Getting out the driver was a delicate and dangerous operation, requiring rescue crews to turn off the power and stabilise the roof before they cut her free.

"[There's been] Quite substantial damage to the building," Rikki Jackson from Queensland Fire & Emergency Services told 9News.

"Some of the main bearings had been dislodged by the vehicle entering."

"She was probably trapped for about 30 minutes before we could safely get her out of the vehicle."

The woman was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition. The paramedics were more concerned with her health, than injuries sustained in the crash.
