Latvia’s media authority announced Tuesday it had revoked the broadcasting license of Russian independent TV channel Dozhd, which has been operating in exile since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February.
The decision “is related to threats to national security and public order,” National Electronic Mass Media Council President Ivars Āboliņš wrote on Twitter, adding: “Everyone should respect Latvian law.”
One of the few independent Russian TV channels, Dozhd — also known as TV Rain — had been fined by the media watchdog earlier this month for airing a map labeling Crimea as Russian territory, and calling Russian forces “our army,” according to Latvian public broadcaster LSM.
The station “will disappear from broadcasting on Thursday, 8 December,” Āboliņš said.
“We continue to work and consider all accusations against us unfair and absurd,” Dozhd said in response, adding, “The channel will stop broadcasting on cable, but will remain on YouTube.”
