A batch of baby spinach sold at discount giant Costco has been found to cause hallucinations and fever, with health authorities issuing an urgent warning to throw it out.

NSW Health advised people to not eat Riviera Farms-branded baby spinach after "a number of cases".

The affected spinach was sold through Costco, with an expiry date of December 16, 2022.

The product is "not safe to consume" and people who still have should throw it out, NSW Health said.

It's believed there may be an "accidental contaminant" in the food, but investigations are continuing.

To date, NSW Health has identified nine people from four separate and unrelated households across Sydney who have required medical attention after developing poisoning soon after eating the product.

Anyone who is concerned about exposure to the spinach should call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26, and anybody experiencing severe symptoms should visit their nearest emergency department, or contact Triple Zero.

Symptoms include:

  • Delirium or confusion
  • Hallucinations
  • Dilated pupils
  • Rapid heartbeat.
  • Flushed face
  • Blurred vision
  • Dry mouth and skin
  • Fever
