After a four-day layout of events that featured a festival-style outdoor music concert, a panel discussion, a tour of the prestigious city of Dakar, Senegal, and a nomination party by celebrities from far and wide, All Africa Music Awards reached its climax with the main awards ceremony at the 15,000 capacity Dakar Arena in Diamniadio, Senegal, with artistes treating fans to good music while Nigerian stars picked up multiple awards.

Three months after Burna Boy received two Grammy nominations and three days after he received a Brit Award nomination for Best International Artist, the megastar picked up the AFRIMA award for the Best Act in Africa and the Best Album of Year award, beating the likes of South African Kabza De Small, Didi B from Vote d’ Ivoire among others.

Having been nominated in four categories, Davido picked up the Best Male Act in African Inspirational Music award for ‘Stand Strong’ and Best Act, Duo or Group in African Pop for ‘High’, together with Adekunle Gold. AG Baby further took home the Best Act Group in African contemporary music award.

While Wizkid walked away with the Best Act in West Africa award, Asake, who has seen unprecedented success in a short time in the music space, was adjudged to be the Artist of the Year.

It wasn’t all that surprising to see Nigerian stars populate the nominee’s list and pick up a host of awards considering their success at home and abroad in the past year. From performing on the FIFA World Cup stages and selling out shows in the biggest auditoriums to featuring on soundtracks of blockbuster movies and making viral songs, Nigerian artistes arguably saw their full bloom yet.

And there’s no stopping. Total music revenue is expected to show an increased compound annual growth rate of 7.20%, resulting in a projected market volume of US$6.38m by 2026.

Meanwhile, other African stars received the recognition they deserve as Guinean singer, Manamba Kanye, won the AFRIMA Best Female Act in West Africa while Ivorian singer, Didi B, went home with the Song of the Year Award.

While the award ceremony went on, fans were intermittently treated to sparkling African music as artistes like Black Sherif, Tiwa Savage, PSquare, Seck, Toofan, Viviene, Manal, Madkhadzi, Fally Ipupa and Sorai Ramos gave wonderful performances.
