A member of the Defense and Interior Committee of Parliament has bemoaned the enskinment of a new Chief in Bawku.
Mr Peter Lanchene Toobu described the happening as a failure of intelligence on the part of security services.
According to him, the development is unfortunate.
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s News Night on Thursday, he explained that the enskinment is a process. Therefore, intelligence could have been gathered in time to halt the enskinment.
“What happened [Enskinment of Bawku Naba] is a total failure of intelligence. What is happening in Bawku? If people can still enskin a chief in the name of Bawku or whatever it is in this country, and in the period of enskinment, intelligence will not help us to get there and nib it in the bud, I think that, that failure is telling and quite unfortunate,” he said.
The former Police officer’s assertion comes after the King of the Mamprugu Traditional Area, Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdulai Sherigah II, on Wednesday enskinned a new chief for Bawku.
The enskinment ceremony was done at the Nayiri’s Palace in Nalerigu.
Meanwhile, government has condemned the enskinment, saying it is illegal.
According to the Wa West MP, the enskinment only portrays that the chieftaincy dispute is far from over, adding that “there is something more.”
He called for the Bawku issue to be made a national conversation for it to be analysed for a solution.
“When we make it a Ghana matter, we can find some illustrious sons of this country with some pedigree to even look at the Bawku issue. Let’s examine, analyse to find a solution to it but we were made to believe that it is over,” he said.
He suggested that the approach deployed to contain the Dagbon chieftaincy crisis be applied in the Bawku situation.
“I am sure that the good offices of the Speaker of Parliament can be used by the President with the support of state authority and the willingness of the political body in the country,” he added.
