Galaxy Unpacked 2023 was relatively unusual, as Samsung announced a new laptop series alongside its most iconic flagship smartphone lineup: the Galaxy S. Samsung appears to have high hopes for its new laptops, and in a recent interview, Lee Min-cheol revealed a few more interesting tidbits of information about the company’s thinking behind the release of the Galaxy Book 3 at Unpacked 2023.
Samsung has a minuscule laptop market share, but the company wants to change that, and the Galaxy Book 3 series is the first chapter in that vision. What made the company think of laptops as an extension to its mobile ecosystem is the way people started interacting with these devices during the pandemic and work-from-home timeframe. Laptops, once shared between multiple family members, became “true personal computers during the pandemic years,” said Lee Min-cheol, corporate VP of Samsung’s Mobile Experience division. Galaxy Book series: The missing link in Samsung ecosystem?
The replacement cycle for laptops is now shorter, and sales are increasing. Even though Samsung held less than 1% market share in the global laptop market in 2021, the company believes that it can expand its footprint and become a more significant player in time. “There will be a time lag before consumer sentiment improves. We expect a turnaround in the second half of this year,” said Lee Min-cheol during a recent press briefing in San Francisco.
Samsung believes that “the Book is essential in completing the ecosystem of the Galaxy series.” The company said it wants to focus on hardware and “upgrading connectivity among the devices.”
The Galaxy Book 3 series consists of the Book 3 Pro, the Book 3 Pro 360, and Samsung’s first-ever laptop to bear the “Ultra” name, i.e., the Galaxy Book 3 Ultra. The latter has RTX 4000-series graphics. The trio features AMOLED displays and is powered by 13th Gen Intel Core CPUs.
Samsung presently offers its Galaxy Book 3 laptops on pre-order terms in select markets. The Book 3 Pro and Pro 360 are supposed to hit the shelves on February 17. The 360 model comes with an S Pen and has a 360-degree hinge, meaning that the laptop can also be used as a Windows tablet. The Galaxy Book 3 Ultra should start going on sale from February 22.
