Things got physical shortly after. As a result, the pilot decided to turn the plane around for the safety of other passengers on board and make an immediate return to Montréal-Trudeau Airport.

"What we understand is that the passenger was invited to take the plane, but he was already drunk," confirmed SPVM Constable Véronique Dubuc in an interview with MTL Blog. "A few minutes after the plane took off, the suspect was disturbing another passenger. They had a verbal altercation, and after that, the suspect committed an assault against the passenger."

Police officers, who waited for the plane to land, arrested the man on the tarmac. He was transported to a detention center to sober up and is set to appear before a court in May.

Viral video footage from flight WG 652 shows police boarding the aircraft and forcibly removing the intoxicated man from his seat as shocked travellers looked on.

Thankfully, the 41-year-old passenger who was assaulted did not sustain serious injuries.

That wasn't the end of the ordeal for the rest of the passengers, though. They were hit with a long delay since the flight crew, having reached the maximum working hours limit, could not continue the flight. Sunwing was forced to scramble for a replacement crew, resulting in a delay of nearly seven hours.

The airline took responsibility for the inconvenience, sharing the following statement with MTL Blog:

"The safety and security of passengers and crew is the top priority at Sunwing Airlines and, in accordance with security protocols, the crew decided to return to Montreal Airport to offload the unruly passenger. Due to the time required to offload the passenger and resolve the incident in question, the operating crew's remaining duty time would not be sufficient to operate the flight and a new crew was assembled to operate the flight, resulting in a flight delay."

The statement continued, "We apologize for the inconvenience to our passengers on board flight WG 652, and thank them for their patience and understanding during the subsequent delay stemming from this security incident."

With a new crew and one less passenger, the flight finally left for Varadero (again) around 10:45 p.m. and reached Cuba at 2:05 a.m.

It's safe to say everyone on board deserves a vacation after that.
This article's cover image was used for illustrative purposes only.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is set to send out payments starting in early April, providing a much-needed break for low- and modest-income Canadians.

The GST/HST Credit is a tax-free payment sent quarterly to help offset the sales taxes (GST and HST) Canadians pay on everyday goods and services. The April payment is part of a series of quarterly deposits designed to help stretch your budget throughout the year, especially with the rising cost of living. The best part? You don't even need to apply for it — if you've filed your taxes, the CRA will calculate and send your payment automatically.

Who's eligible for the GST/HST Credit?

To qualify for the GST/HST Credit, you need to be a Canadian resident for tax purposes and at least 19 years old. If you're under 19 but married, in a common-law relationship, or living with your child, you may still be eligible. Your eligibility and payment amount depend on your family income and size. For example, individuals who earned more than $54,704 in 2023 won't qualify. However, families with four or more children can qualify with an income up to $72,244.

How much can you expect?

The amount you'll receive depends on your household income and family situation. Here's a breakdown of the maximum amounts for the upcoming April 2025 payment:

$129.75 for a single person

$170 for a couple (this includes a payment of $40.25 for the spouse or common-law partner)

An additional $44.75 for each child under 19 years old (with $129.75 for the first child if you're a single parent)

These payments will be sent out in equal quarterly installments, with the first one arriving on April 4, 2025.

When are payments made?

The next payment date is April 4, 2025, with future payments scheduled for July 4 and October 3, 2025. The payments for the upcoming year, starting in July 2025, will be based on your 2024 tax return.

Is the GST/HST credit taxable?

No, the GST/HST Credit is not considered taxable income, so you don’t need to include it in your tax return. It’s designed to help offset the taxes you've already paid, and it won't affect any other benefits or credits you're receiving.

To ensure you continue to receive your GST/HST Credit, just make sure you're up-to-date with your tax filings. If you haven't filed yet, be sure to do so soon, as the CRA uses your most recent tax return to determine your eligibility.

For more details about the GST/HST Credit and how to apply, check out the Canada Revenue Agency's website.

Love this?
