Since announcing his return to music with his fourth studio album ‘Timeless’ on March 21, 2023, Davido has yet again taken over conversation in the digital space even before the album was released on March 31.
The album marks his return to music after four months hiatus following the demise of his three-year-old son, Ifeanyi Adeleke.
The release of the 17-track album has been one of the more refreshing and exciting news for Davido’s fans and many music lovers since the beginning of the year.
Here are our 10 immediate takeaways from ‘Timeless’:
Davido makes political statement
Davido broke his long silence on his favourite uncle’s inauguration as Osun governor since November 2022.
Considering how he was involved in Ademola Adeleke’s campaign in 2018 and 2022 when his uncle ran for governor and his eventual emergence in 2022, his silence on political issues, especially during the 2023 elections, which was due to the loss of his son, was felt by many fans.
With all the drama and court judgement sacking and reinstating Adeleke as Osun governor, the usual Davido would have been over the internet dragging politicians trying to steal his uncle’s mandate.
“Who know say Uncle Demola go be governor?” (Whoever thought Uncle Demola would become Governor?) he asked in ‘Over Dem’ the first track on the album.
Loss and how life has been unfair
As expected, Davido addressed the loss of his friends in the past years, but he had to do that in the 16th track – LCND.
Make I tell you something, life is not fair.
Lost many of my guys but I thank God I still dey here.
I no go lie say e weak me
But I stay strong and stay fierce.”
Aside from his son Ifeanyi who died in 2022, in the last six years, Davido has lost six members of his crew and close friends, from Tagbo to DJ Olu, son of Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, and his photographer – Fortune, among others.
Davido restates his loyalty and declares self as a godfather
Davido is the type of friend everyone wants in their circle. His energy, loyalty and how he constantly pushes people around him to become the best is quite rare.
“When I’m with you, I’m with you for life” he said in ‘Godfather’ where he declared his position as a godfather.
Is Davido truly a godfather in music? His trajectory in the last decade shows that it is safe to say he has earned the position of a godfather having contributed to the success of many young artistes over the years – Peruzzi, Mayorkun, Zlatan Ibile and those who are not singers.
In politics, all it takes to be a godfather is to sponsor candidates for an election and ensure they win. So, Davido is right to declare himself a godfather in music.
Amapiano remains undefeated
His deployment of Amapiano sound added some unique flavour to the album. ‘Unavailable’ featuring Musa Keys is a good example.
A Breakfast Anthem
Davido has added another hit to the long list of breakfast anthems with ‘E Pain Me’ where he talked about the bad girl who turned him to a swing ‘jangulover’ and left him heartbroken.
We may never run out of breakfast songs with ‘E Pain Me’ now added to the long list.
Who wants Davido down?
In more than three tracks, Davido talks about those plotting his downfall. Should we be worried or just take the lyrics as another artistic expression?
In ‘Away’
“I know they want to see me fall, hmm. But I dey stand fit, stand no dey fall o.”
In LCND:
“Before I leave this life oh wey. Ko s’omo na, mo ma jaiye mi”
In Over Dem:
“If dem wan turn goliath. I be David for life…If dem dey wait make dem see me flop. Dem go wait till thy kingdom come.”
Prioritise yourself
In ‘Precision’ Davido reminds us of the importance of focusing our energy on ourselves before others.
My time my energy
Don’t waste on nobody
Cause I dey try sort myself
And you for try sort yourself
With Timeless, Davido looks into the past and pushes forward
With Timeless, Davido reminds us of the plea he made in his breakout single ‘Dami Duro’ where he appealed to the world not to stop him, but this time, he’s telling us that the many losses and setbacks he’s experienced in recent times cannot hold him down as he’s “shooting up for the stars”.
In LCND he said:
I go double the bag oh
If I hear say I slack oh wey
Ko s’omo na, temi ye mi
He reminds us he’s No.1
For the umpteenth time, Davido took ‘Timeless’ to remind us that he’s 001. A statement he also made with his customised pendant in March 2022 which sparked reactions from fans of Davido and Burna Boy.
This time Davido says:
Number one no forget
If you dey vex, make you go kick bucket.
There is a lot to be grateful for
Amidst all the experiences of the past year. Davido hinted in ‘Over Dem’ that there are “too many blessings me I no fit talk”. A confirmation that it hasn’t all been gloomy and there have been many wins for the music star.
