Tems is about to make history as the first Nigerian artiste to win an Oscar, and we all need to witness it happen. The music star could win the award for Best Original Song for her role as a co-writer on Rihanna’s ‘Lift Me Up’.
‘Lift Me Up’, a song off the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever album, was nominated alongside top contenders like Lady Gaga’s ‘Hold My Hand’ for the movie Top Gun: Maverick, Diane Warren’s Applause for the films ‘Tell It Like A Woman’, “Naatu Naatu” from ‘RRR’ and “This Is A Life” from ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’.
If Tems wins this award, she will become the first Nigerian artiste to be awarded an Oscar, and this would be adding to her long list of accolades. Within a year, she has become the first African female music artiste to win the BET Award’s Best International Act and the first Nigerian female artiste to win a Grammy Award for her feature on Future’s single ft Drake, ‘Wait For U’.
In addition to Tems possibly making history, Rihanna would also be performing just a month after she took the Super Bowl LVII halftime stage by storm, with her performance going viral and garnering over 118 million viewers for the show.
