Three weeks after the release of his fourth studio album ‘Timeless’, Davido held his first concert in Lagos. The concert dubbed ‘A Timeless Night With Davido’ is part of Davido’s album tour, which commenced in New York on April 2 and continued in London on April 5.
It also marked his return to stage in Lagos since the ‘A Decade Of Davido’ concert held on December 24, 2021.
The concert which was hosted by Mr Macaroni and Kiekie was a first of its kind as it was held at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Onikan, Lagos, on Sunday, April 23, 2023.
With a set design that showcased the music stars’ preparedness for the concert and a lineup of budding artistes that showcased their music to the 5000 capacity audience, Timeless with Davido was definitely one for the books.
Here are some takeaways from the concert.
The Upcoming Artistes
One thing Davido has never failed to always do is support budding artistes. Whether these artistes are signed to his label or not, he makes sure to give artistes who he respects an opportunity on his platform.
So it was not shocking when acts like Odumodublvck, Majeeed, Spyro, and more mounted the stage to perform their songs before the 001 himself came on stage.
Security
When the concert venue was announced concerns were raised as to whether the venue would be safe enough for a Davido concert. Considering that he is a global star with a huge following it was not a stretch to raise these concerns.
However, days before the concert he had met with the appropriate authorities to keep things under control. And there were really no major security concerns recorded during the course of the concert.
The Energy
Davido has always been a very energetic performer. He has a good time on stage and as a result his fans also have a good time as they watch their fave performs. At the Timeless Concert last night, he definitely brought his energy and it was exciting to see.
Hit singles after hit singles, he proved that he was indeed one of the greatest artistes to come out of Nigeria. But he also reaffirms his 001 position with his hit-filled album ‘Timeless’.
Arrive On Time And Don’t Keep Your Fans Waiting
At 12 am Davido mounted the stage while performing some of his earliest classics from Aye, to Skelewu, Dami Duro, and Gobe. He came in time and came with a set list enough to get his audience gingered.
We cannot exactly say the same thing happened when Burna Boy came to perform in Lagos. There were hits but Burna Boy’s timing was off. Want to host a concert in Lagos, start your set early.
And Davido did exactly that, giving his audience 2 hours of hits.
Get As Much Featured Artistes To Show Up
It’s always better to hear live performances than a backing track of your favourite artiste who couldn’t make it to a performance for a song he had featured on.
For the Timeless Concert, Asake, Mayorkun, Fave, The Cavemen and more were only a few out of Davido’s list of featured artistes that showed up for the concert.
And they delivered.
Eko Atlantic Is Not A Venue
Eko Atlantic is not the only venue you can hold a concert in Nigeria. Whether or not you use places like TBS or not, artistes and their managements need to make better choices when it comes to choosing concert venues.
Inspection is important
Although there is no stopping traffic in Lagos, Nigeria, the situation can be better managed if inspection is taken seriously. From how the stage is arranged to who seats where and what setting would create a better experience for the audience, all these things matter.
Sound Is Vital
No one wants to go to a concert that has the sound quality of a low-budget CD player. They are there to get the best live experience of their favourite artistes, and the artiste owes it to everyone to keep their sound in check.
Unlike the usual Nigerian error, the sound at the Timeless concert was great, and there were no abominable errors.
We hope to see more of it.
Keep The Regular Ticket Holders Close To The Stage
One mistake any concert organiser would make is to put the VIP holders at the front of the stage. The people that give all the hype and scream along with you are the regular ticket holders. Put them close to the stage to maintain the energy and find ways to elevate the vision of the VIP holders.
Davido and his team did exactly that at the Timeless concert and it was a blast.
Give Audiences Their Money’s Worth
Aside from his performance and attention to security, another thing worth emulating is the quality and variety of meals that were made available to the VIP ticket holders.
Gbemi Olateru-Olagbegi, the Group Vice President of Marketing for Wakanow, mentioned that in her decades of experience in the media space, this is the first concert she had gone to where the food on the tables was nice.
“First concert I’ve been to where the food (on the tables) is nice. Hot jollof & chicken, Spaghetti, small chops, suya, etc #TimelessConcert. Those “event halls “ should take note,” she said.
Davido has officially raised the menu bar, artistes kindly act accordingly.
