The continent’s most attended film award show, Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), returns for its ninth edition and its back and better giving recognition to a dichotomy of new age and veteran Nollywood acts who have impacted the film industry in the past year with their work.

For this edition, AMVCA-winning Nollywood actor Bisola Aiyeola and award-winning Ghanaian actor Adjetey Anang alongside child actors Jasmine Olarotimi and Nifemi Lawal announced the nominees for the categories on Sunday, April 16, 2023.

Here are some of the actors who got their first-ever AMVCA nominations this year;

Tobi Bakre

Tobi Bakre has had a great year. From his breakout role as Andy in the 2019 film Sugar Rush he has seamlessly mastered and created a path for himself where he thrives in thriller series and action movies.

The actor, who earned a nomination for Best Actor In A Drama, Movie/TV Series for his role as Akin in Jade Osiberu’s Brotherhood, emerged into the limelight after he became the second runner-up on the third season of Africa’s Biggest Reality TV show, BBNaija.

Since he emerged from the show, he has featured in an exclusive list of highly acclaimed films, including Hustle (2018), Brotherhood (2022), The Blood Covenant (2022), and Gangs Of Lagos (2023).

Tobi Bakre would be competing for this award alongside other outstanding acts like Chidi Mokeme, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Tope Tedela, Femi Adebayo, O.C. Ukeje, Richard Mofe Damijo, and more. Whether he wins or not, he is a star and very deserving of this nomination.

Scarlet Gomez

When Netng had the opportunity to speak with Scarlet Gomez about her role as Wura on the Showmax Original series, the passion at which she expressed herself and how connected and teary-eyed she was while explaining her role posited that she was indeed in tune with the message she was trying to convey by telling the story of the Iperindo Community. She simply put her soul into the role.

Months later, she has earned a nomination in the Best Actress In A Drama Movie Or TV Series category for her role as Wura Amoo-Adeleke. Since she emerged in the industry in 2015 with her role in Kayode Peters’ Doll House, she has been on an upward stride.

She is nominated alongside actresses like Bimbo Ademoye, Ini Dima-Okojie, Enado Odigie, Immaculata Oko Kasum, Osas Ighodaro, Nse Ikpe-Etim, Ini Edo, and more.

Ini Dima-Okojie broke into the Nollywood scene in 2016 when she served as Production Assistant in the 2015 film Before 30, since then she has featured in numerous highly acclaimed films and series, including Skinny Girls In Transit, Blood Sisters, North East, Sylvia, Namaste Wahala and more.

In the ninth edition of the AMVCAs Ini Dima-Okojie earned a nomination for Best Actress In A Drama Movie Or TV Series with the Showmax Original Series, Flawsome, where she plays the role of Ramat, a married middle-class social activist who takes care of abused girls. In the series, she tries to navigate a not-so-perfect life while sticking to her flawed yet awesome friends.

She is nominated for this category alongside her co-actor Enado Odigie and other outstanding acts like Scarlet Gomez, Osas Ighodaro, Nse Ikpe-Etim, and more.

Yinka Quadri

With over 90 Yoruba film credits, Yinka Quadri finally earns his first-ever AMVCA nomination with his feature on Kunle Afolayan’s Anikulapo. The veteran actor, who debuted in Nollywood in 1976 started his career with a role in the Yoruba television series Agbodorogun.

Forty-seven years later, he earned his first AMVCA nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Movie or TV Series. He is nominated alongside actors like Bucci Franklin, Taiwo Hassan, OC Ukeje, Abdisattar Ahmed, and more.

Nosa Afolabi (Lasisi Elenu)

Lasisi gained the spotlight in the entertainment industry with his unrivalled comedy skits, but he has branched out into screenplay with roles in films like Ghost and The Tout, Sylva, The Razz Guy, and more.

The content creator known for his hilarious skits made with a filter that widens the shape of his mouth has moved past the filter to establish himself as an act capable of giving award-winning comedic performances.

He was nominated in the Best Actor In A Comedy Drama, Movie, Or TV Series category alongside acts like Samuel Perry (Broda Shaggi), Nkem Owoh, Nedu Ani (Nedu Wazobia), and many more.

Albert Oluwatoyin

Oluwatoyin Albert, popularly known as Datwarrigirl, is a Comedienne and OAP who delved into Nollywood with the 2020 film Akpe: Return of the Beast. Since then, the Department of Theatre Arts graduate from Delta State University has been featured in multiple Nollywood films.

For the 2023 AMVCAs, she was nominated in the Best Actress In A Comedy Movie Or TV Series category for her role in the Accelerate TV Comedy Series, ‘Visa On Arrival’. She is nominated alongside Mercy Johnson Okojie, Funke Akindele, Bimbo Ademoye, and more.

Chidi Mokeme

Chidi Mokeme is a reality TV host and actor who reached nationwide popularity as the host of Gulder Ultimate Search. In 2003, he debuted in the film industry with his feature on The Seed, and since then, he has established himself as one of the most versatile actors in Nollywood.

In 2022, his role in Ini Edo’s Shanty Town showcased his brilliance as an actor as he trended for days for the masterful delivery of his character. This delivery earned him the AMVCA nomination for Best Actor In A Drama Movie/TV Series alongside actors like Femi Adebayo, Richard Mofe Damijo, Blossom Chukwujekwu, and more.
